Ngữ pháp Quá khứ tiếp diễn

1. Khái niệm Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn dùng để diễn tả hành động đang xảy ra tại một thời điểm rõ ràng trong quá khứ, hoặc những hành động lặp đi lặp lại trong quá khứ gây khó chịu cho người khác.

2. Cách dùng Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn dùng để diễn tả:

a. Hành động đang xảy ra tại một thời điểm cụ thể trong quá khứ

Eg: I was listening to music at 7 o’clock last night.

(Tôi đang nghe nhạc lúc 7h tối qua.)

b. Hai hay nhiều hành động đang xảy ra độc lập trong quá khứ (không có liên hệ hay ảnh hưởng lẫn nhau)

Eg: While my mom was cooking, my dad was watching TV.

(Trong khi mẹ tôi đang nấu nướng thì bố tôi đang xem TV.)

c. Hành động đang xảy ra trong quá khứ (QKTD) thì hành động khác xen vào (QKĐ)

Eg: When we were playing in the playground, my parents came.

(Khi chúng tôi đang chơi ở sân chơi thì bố mẹ tôi đến.)

d. Hành động đã xảy ra và kéo dài trong quá khứ gây cho người nói sự bực mình

Eg: He was always ringing me up. (Anh ta cứ gọi điện cho tôi mãi.)

Cách dùng này thường đi với 2 trạng từ: always và constantly

Lưu ý: Không sử dụng thì quá khứ tiếp diễn cho những động từ chỉ tri giác, nhận thức

Eg: When the students heard the bell, they left their class.

(Khi các học sinh nghe thấy tiếng chuông, chúng rời khỏi lớp.)

3. Cấu trúc Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

(+) Khẳng định

I/ He/ She/ It + was + Ving

I was watching TV at 11 p.m last night.

(Tôi đang xem TV vào 11h đêm qua.)

We/ You/ They + were + Ving

The children were playing football at that time.

(Bọn trẻ đang chơi bóng đá lúc đó.)

(-) Phủ định

I/ He/ She/ It + was not (wasn’t) + Ving

I was not studying at 10.00 last night.

(10h tối qua tôi đang không học bài.)

We/ You They + were not (weren’t) + Ving

They weren’t looking at me when I saw them.

(Họ đang không nhìn tôi khi tôi thấy họ.)

(?) Nghi vấn

(Từ để hỏi) + was + I/ he/ she/ it + Ving?

Where was she going at that time?

(Cô ấy đang đi đâu vào lúc đó?)

(Từ để hỏi) + were + we/ you/ they + Ving?

Were you watching TV at 10 p.m yesterday?

(Có phải bạn đang xem TV lúc 10 tối qua không?)

4. Cách thêm –ing vào động từ Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

Động từ nguyên thể	Cách chuyển	Ví dụ
Động từ tận cùng là “e”	Bỏ “e” thêm “-ing”	Prepare – preparing (chuẩn bị)
Động từ tận cùng là “ee”	Thêm “-ing” như thường	See – seeing (nhìn)
Động từ tận cùng là phụ âm (trừ h, w, y, x) và đằng trước là một nguyên âm	Gấp đôi phụ âm và thêm “-ing”	Win – winning (thắng)

Một số động từ đặc biệt cần học thuộc:

Động từ nguyên thể	Động từ đuôi “-ing”
Die (chết)	dying
Lie (nằm)	lying
Tie (trói)	tying
Panic (làm hoảng sợ)	panicking

6. Dấu hiệu nhận biết Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

• at + giờ chính xác + thời gian trong quá khứ

• in + năm xác định

• when

• while

• at that time

Eg: I was teaching English at 10 a.m yesterday.

(Tôi đang dạy tiếng Anh vào 10h sáng hôm qua.)
