Bài 1: Read the situations and make sentences from the words in brackets

1. I was very tired when I arrived home.

Bài 2: Read the situations and complete the sentences

1. We played tennis yesterday. Half an hour after we began playing, it started to rain.

2. I had arranged to meet Tom in a restaurant. I arrived and waited for him. After 20 minutes I suddenly realized that I was in the wrong restaurant.

Ngữ pháp Quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn

Cách dùng thì Qúa khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn

- Diễn tả một hành động đã bắt đầu trong quá khứ, xảy ra liên tục kéo dài trong một khoảng thời gian, và kết thúc tại một thời điểm cụ thể trong quá khứ.

Ví dụ: I had been doing my homework from the morning to noon yesterday. (Tôi đã làm bài tập liên tục từ sáng đến trưa ngày hôm qua.)

Sự việc “làm bài tập” bắt đầu từ “sáng hôm qua”, kéo dài đến “trưa hôm qua” thì kết thúc. → Toàn bộ quá trình diễn ra trong quá khứ.

- Diễn tả một hành động xảy ra kéo dài liên tục cho đến khi có một hành động khác trong quá khứ chen vào

Ví dụ: I had been playing games until my brother asked me to go to the market. (Tôi đã chơi game cho đến khi anh trai tôi rủ tôi đi chợ.)

Hành động "chơi game" đang diễn ra cho đến khi có hành động "đi chợ" chen vào.

- Diễn tả kết quả do một hành động gây ra trong quá khứ

Ví dụ: John was so tired because he had been working all day long. (John rất mệt vì anh ấy đã làm việc liên tục cả ngày.)

"mệt" là kết quả của hành động "làm việc cả ngày". Việc John cảm thấy “mệt” xảy ra sau sự việc "làm việc cả ngày" → “was so tired” được sử dụng ở thì quá khứ đơn, còn “had been working” được sử dụng ở thì quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn.

- Diễn tả một hành động xảy ra liên tục trước 1 mốc thời gian cụ thể trong quá khứ

Ví dụ: I had been walking for 2 hours by 8p.m last night. (Tôi đã đi bộ được 2 tiếng tính đến 8 giờ tối qua.)

Hành động "đi bộ" được thực hiện trước một mốc thời điểm cụ thể là "8 giờ tối".

Lưu ý:

Thì Quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn có thể sử dụng câu điều kiện loại III để diễn tả một sự việc không có thật trong quá khứ và giả định kết quả nếu nó xảy ra.

Ví dụ: If I had been paying more attention in the classroom, I would have passed the test. (Nếu lúc đó tôi tập trung hơn trong lớp học, tôi đã có thể qua được bài thi.)

Dấu hiệu nhận biết

Thì Quá khứ hoàn thành tiếp diễn có thể được nhận biết qua một số dấu hiệu như sau:

- until then: cho đến lúc đó

Ví dụ: Until then, I had been cooking. (Cho đến lúc đó, tôi vẫn đang nấu ăn.)

- by the time: trước lúc, vào thời điểm

- by+ mốc thời gian: từ trước cho đến lúc đó

Ví dụ: By the time my mom arrived, I had been watching TV. (Trước lúc mẹ về, tôi vẫn đang xem TV.)

- prior to that time: thời điểm trước đó

Ví dụ: Prior to that time, the situation had always been under control. (Trước thời điểm đó, tình hình vẫn luôn nằm trong tầm kiểm soát)
