Bài 1: Complete the sentences using enough + the following words:

big    chairs    cups    fit    milk    money

qualifications    room    time    warm    well

1. I can't run very fat. I'm not fit enough.

2. Some of us had to sit on the floor because there weren't enough chairs.

3. I'd like to buy a car, but I haven't got .... at the moment

4. Have you got .... in your coffee or would you like some more?

5. Are you .... ? Or shall I switch on the hearing?

A. Vị trí của enough trong tiếng Anh

Enough đứng sau tính từ và trạng từ

Ví dụ:

- He didn't get the job because he wasn't experienced enough. (không nói 'enough experienced')

(Anh ta không được giao công việc đó vì anh ta không đủ kinh nghiệm.)

- You won't pass the examination if you don't work hard enough.

(Bạn sẽ không thi đậu nếu bạn không chăm chỉ đúng lúc.)

- She shouldn't get married yet. She's not old enough.

(Cô ấy chưa nên kết hôn vội. Cô ấy chưa đủ tuổi.)

So sánh enough và too...:

- You never stop working. You work too hard.

(Anh chưa bao giờ ngưng làm việc cả. Anh làm việc quá nhiều.)

Enough thường đứng trước danh từ

Ví dụ:

- He didn't get the job because he didn't have enough experience. (không nói 'experience enough')

(Anh ta không được giao công việc đó vì anh ta không đủ kinh nghiệm.)

- I'd like to go away on holiday but I haven't got enough money.

(Tôi rất muốn đi xa vào kỳ nghỉ nhưng tôi không có đủ tiền.)

- Some of us had to sit on the floor because there weren't enough chairs.

(Vài người trong chúng tôi đã phải ngồi xuống sàn nhà vì ở đó không đủ ghế.)

Ghi chú: Bạn cần lưu ý cách sử dụng enough ở đây:

- We didn't have enough time. (không nói: 'the time wasn't enough')

- There is enough money. (không nói: 'the money is enough')

Bạn cũng có thể dùng enough một mình (không có danh từ đi cùng):

- I'll lend you some money if you haven't got enough.

(Tôi sẽ cho anh mượn ít tiền nếu anh không đủ.)

So sánh enough và too much... /too many...

- We can't go away on holiday. It costs too much (money).

(Chúng ta không thể đi nghỉ mát được. Đi như vậy tốn kém lắm.)

- There are too many people and not enough chairs.

(Có quá nhiều người và không có đủ ghế.)

B. Cấu trúc enough/too... for somebody/something

Chúng ta có thể sử dụng cấu trúc: enough/too... for somebody/something để diễn đạt cái gì đó là đủ/quá ... cho ai/vật gì đó

- I haven't got enough money for a holiday.

(Tôi không có đủ tiền để đi nghỉ mát.)

- He wasn't experience enough for the job.

(Anh ta không đủ kinh nghiệm để làm công việc đó.)

- This shirt is too big for me. I need a smaller size.

(Chiếc sơ mi này quá to với tôi. Tôi cần cỡ nhỏ hơn.)

Ngoài ra, chúng ta còn có thể sử dụng cấu trúc: enough/too... to do something để diễn đạt nghĩa đủ/quá... để làm điều gì

- I haven't got enough money to go on holiday. (không nói 'for going')

(Tôi không có đủ tiền để đi nghỉ mát.)

- He wasn't experienced enough to do the job.

(Anh ta không đủ kinh nghiệm làm công việc đó.)

- She's not old enough to get married.

hoặc

She's too young to get married.

(Cô ấy chưa đủ tuổi để lập gia đình.)

- Let's get a taxi. It's too far to walk home from here.

(Gọi taxi đi. Khoảng cách quá xa để có thể đi bộ về nhà.)

- There weren't enough chairs for everyone to sit down.

(Không có đủ ghế cho tất cả mọi người ngồi.)

- They spoke too quickly for us to understand.

(Họ nói quá nhanh làm chúng tôi không thể hiểu được.)

C. Cấu trúc too ... to trong tiếng Anh

Ví dụ: với một tình huống như dưới đây, chúng ta có thể có các cách diễn đạt khác nhau.

- The food was very hot. We couldn't eat it.

(Thức ăn rất nóng. Chúng tôi đã không thể ăn được.)

và

- The food was so hot that we couldn't eat it.

(Thức ăn nóng tới mức chúng tôi không thể ăn được.)

nhưng

- The food was too hot to eat. (không có 'it')

(Thức ăn quá nóng để có thể ăn được.)

Một số ví dụ tương tự:

- The wallet was too big to put in my pocket. (không nói 'too big to put it')

(Chiếc ví quá to để có thể cho vào túi của tôi.)

- These boxes are too heavy to carry. (không nói 'too heavy to carry them')

(Những chiếc hộp này quá nặng để có thể mang theo.)

- The water wasn't clean enough to swim in.

(Nước không đủ sạch để bơi.)
