Ngữ pháp phân biệt Like và As

Cách dùng as và like

* Like và as đều có là liên từ và giới từ, có nghĩa khá giống nhau, tuy nhiên cách dùng lại có nhiều sự khác biệt.

I. Cách sử dụng Like

- Cách sử dụng của Like với vai trò là giới từ

Like = similar to / the same as: có nghĩa là “giống như” ( thường về ngoại hình hoặc thói quen), và thường đi với các động từ như: look, sound, feel, taste, seem …( động từ cảm giác).

Với cách dùng này, ta có thể thêm các từ diễn tả mức độ như: a bit, just, very, so… vào trước like.

Like được sử dụng như một giới từ nên có các tính chất tương tự giới từ như theo sau bởi danh động từ, cụm danh từ.

Eg: She looks like having a sleepless night.

( Cô ấy nhìn có vẻ như có một đem mất ngủ)

That dish smells very like burning.

( Món ăn kia hình như có mùi cháy)

- Cách sử dụng của Like với vai trò là một liên từ

Like thường được sử dụng như một liên từ thay thế cho as trong văn phong thân mật, hoặc văn nói. Tuy nhiên, theo một số cuốn sách ngữ pháp Tiếng Anh cổ điển, cách dùng này của like không được chấp nhận.

Eg: Like you know, we have had some trouble.

= As you know, we have had some trouble.

( Như bạn biết, chúng ta đã gặp một số rắc rối)

II. Cách dùng As

- Cách dùng của As với vai trò là một giới từ

As = in the role of : có nghĩa là “trong vai trò”, thường dùng để diễn tả mục đích sử dụng, chức năng của vật, và nghề nghiệp của người.

Cấu trúc diễn tả nghề nghiệp thường được sử dụng: work as + job position (accountant/ marketer/ CEO/ leader….)

Eg: Mike has worked as a designer for 3 years.

( Mike đã làm việc như một nhà thiết kế 3 năm rồi)

Students sometimes use pencil as a ruler.

( Học sinh thường sử dụng bút chì như là thước kẻ)

- Cách dùng của As với vai trò là một liên từ

Với vai trò liên từ, As thể hiện rất đa dạng các ngữ nghĩa khác nhau cơ bản sau đây.

As = When: có nghĩa là “khi”, diễn tả một hành động đang diễn ra, một hành động khác xen vào. Mệnh đề sau as thường được chia ở thể tiếp diễn

Eg: He came as we were preparing for our dinner.

As = Since = Because: có nghĩa là “bởi vì”, dùng để diễn tả mối quan hệ nguyên nhân – kết quả, thường đứng ở đầu câu, trong văn phòng trang trọng.

Phân biệt với “Because”:

  • As = Since diễn tả những lý do, nguyên nhân đã biết, không phải nội dung quan trọng cần nhấn mạnh. Mệnh đề As, Since không đứng riêng lẻ mà phải dùng tích hợp trong câu.
  • Becausedùng để diễn tả những thông tin mới, lý do chưa biết, cần thông báo, nhấn mạnh. Mệnh đề Because có thể đứng một mình, được sử dụng như cấu trúc trả lời cho câu hỏi bắt đầu bằng Why.

Eg: As he wasn’t ready, we went without him.

Eg: Q: Why was she late for the meeting ?

A:Because she got traffic jam in 30 minutes.

As = In the way that: có nghĩa là “theo cách…” dùng để diễn tả cách thức

Eg: As I expected, Taylor ‘s new song is amazing.

III. Phân biệt giữa Like và As

Trong cùng một vai trò giới từ, like và as có nghĩa khác nhau:

like + noun

as + noun

Giống như

Vai trò, chứng năng

Eg:

– They looks like a family.

They looks as a family.

Edison was known as who invented light bulb.

– Edison was known like who invented light bulb.

Trong vai trò liên từ, as được ưu tiên sử dụng và phổ biến hơn like.

Cách dùng này của like bị hạn chế trong ngữ pháp, và văn viết. Tuy nhiên trong văn nói, ta vẫn có thể sử dụng like để thể hiện sự thân mật như đã nói ở trên.
