Bài 2:In some of these sentences you need could (not can). Change the sentences where necessary.

1. The story can be true but I don't think it is.

--> OK (could go is also possible)

4. If you're hungry we can have dinner now.

5. It's so nice here.I can stay here all day but unfortunately I have to go.

Ngữ pháp Could

1. Cách sử dụng Could

Could có nhiều cách sử dụng.

  • có thể là quá khứ của can.

Ví dụ:

  • Look! Can you see that UFO?

Nhìn kìa, bạn có thể nhìn thấy cái vật thể bay lạ lạ kia ko? (hiện tại)

  • I have looked, but I couldn’t see anything.

Tôi nhìn rồi, nhưng tôi chả thấy gì cả. (quá khứ)

Could còn có thể được dùng để nói về những hành động có thể xảy ra trong tương lai (thường dùng khi nêu một gợi ý cho ai đó).

Ví dụ:

  • What shall we do on Jenna’s birthday? We could have a party.

Chúng ta nên làm gì vào sinh nhật của Jenna? Chúng ta có thể mở tiệc.

  • It’s a nice, sunny day. You could go for a walk.

Hôm nay nắng đẹp, bạn nên đi dạo.

  • If your money is tight, you could ask me for help.

Nếu bạn đang thiếu tiền, bạn có thể hỏi xin sự giúp đỡ của tôi.

  • cũng có thể sử dụng trong những câu trên với ý nghĩa khuyên nhủ, nhưng người ta có thể dùng could khi kém chắc chắn hơn hoặc không có ý định biến lời nói thành hành động.

Ví dụ:

  • My boss is so angry with Jenna. He could kill her at any time.

Sếp tôi rất bực tức với Jenna. Ông ấy có thể giết cô ta bất cứ lúc nào (không dùng he can kill her vì ông ta không định giết thật, chỉ mang ý nhấn mạnh cho ý nghĩa bực tức ở câu trước).

2. Could dùng để nói khả năng trong hiện tại và tương lai (thay thế cho might)

Người ta có thể sử dụng could để nói về một việc có khả năng xảy ra trong cả hiện tại và tương lai.

Ví dụ:

  • Your phone is ringing. It could be your mom.

Điện thoại của bạn đang rung kìa. Đó có thể là mẹ bạn.

  • I have no idea when our guest arrives here. He could arrive at any time.

Tôi không biết bao giờ thì khách của chúng tôi mới tới. Anh ta có thể tới bất cứ lúc nào.

Can không thể thay thế cho could ở trong những câu trên. Could trong trường hợp này mang ý nghĩa tương tự như might, nên ta chỉ có thể thay could bằng might để câu không thay đổi ý nghĩa.

Ví dụ:

  • Your phone is ringing. It might be your mom.

I have no idea when our guest arrives here. He might arrive at anytime.
