Ngữ pháp câu điều kiện loại 1, loại 2

A. Câu điều kiện loại 1 và 2 trong tiếng Anh

Bạn theo dõi và so sánh các ví dụ sau:

Ví dụ 1:

Sue has lost her watch. She thinks it may be at Ann's house.

(Sue đã làm mất chiếc đồng hồ của cô ấy. Cô ấy nghĩ nó có thể ở nhà Ann.)

- SUE: I think I left my watch at your house. Have you seen it?

(Tôi nghĩ mình để cái đồng hồ ở nhà bạn rồi. Bạn có nhìn thấy nó không?)

- ANN: No, but I'll have a look when I get home. IF I FIND IT, I'll tell you.

(Không, nhưng tôi sẽ xem lại khi tôi về nhà. Nếu tôi tìm được, tôi sẽ nói với bạn.)

Trong ví dụ này, Ann cảm thấy có một khả năng thực tế rằng cô ấy sẽ tìm thấy chiếc đồng hồ của Sue để quên ở nhà mình. Vì vậy cô ấy nói:

If I find ..., I'll ...: nếu tôi tìm thấy ... , tôi sẽ ...

Đây cũng là cấu trúc của câu điều kiện loại 1, là loại câu điều kiện có thực ở hiện tại.

Ví dụ 2:

Ann says: IF I FOUND a wallet in the street, I'D take it to the police.

(Ann nói: nếu tôi nhặt được một cái ví trên đường, tôi sẽ mang nó đến đồn cảnh sát.)

Đây là một tình huống khác. Ở ví dụ này, Ann không nghĩ tới khía cạnh thực tế của vấn đề. Cô ấy đang giả định một tình huống và không mong chờ tìm thấy một cái ví ở trên đường. Vì vậy cô ấy nói:

If I found ..., I'd (=I would)...(KHÔNG dùng "If I find ..., I'll ...")

Khi bạn giả định một tình huống tương tự như vậy, bạn sử dụng cấu trúc:

If + thì quá khứ (ví dụ: if I found/if you were/if we didn't ...)

Động từ ở thì quá khứ nhưng cấu trúc này lại không mang nghĩa quá khứ.

Đây cũng là cấu trúc của câu điều kiện loại 2, là loại câu điều kiện không có thực ở hiện tại.

Ví dụ:

- What would you do if you won a million pounds?

(we don't really expect this to happen)

Bạn sẽ làm gì nếu bạn kiếm được một triệu bảng?

(chúng ta không thực sự mong chờ điều này sẽ xảy ra)

- I don't really want to go to their party, but I probably will go.

They'd be offended if I didn't go.

(Tôi thật sự không muốn tới bữa tiệc của họ, nhưng có thể tôi sẽ đi.)

(Họ sẽ giận nếu tôi không tới.)

(- Sarah has decided not to apply for the job. She isn't really qualified for it, so she probably wouldn't get it if she applied.

(Sarah đã quyết định không nộp đơn xin việc nữa. Cô ấy thực sự không đủ năng lực cho việc đó, vì vậy cô ấy có thể không nhận được việc nếu cô ấy nộp đơn.)

B. Có sử dụng would trong mệnh đề if

Thường thì chúng ta không sử dụng would trong mệnh đề if.

Ví dụ:

- I'd be very frightened if somebody pointed a gun at me.

(KHÔNG nói "if somebody would point")

(Tôi sẽ rất sợ ai đó chĩa súng vào tôi.)

- If I didn't go to their party, they'd be offended.

(KHÔNG nói "If I wouldn't go")

(Nếu tôi không tới bữa tiệc của họ, họ sẽ giận.)

Nhưng bạn cũng có thể sử dụng "if ...would ..." khi bạn yêu cầu một người làm việc gì đó.

Ví dụ:

- "from a formal letter" I would be grateful if you would send me your brochure as soon as possible.

("trong một lá thư giao dịch" Tôi sẽ biết ơn nếu quí ông gửi đến cho tôi cuốn tự giới thiệu càng sớm càng tốt.)

- "Shall I close the door?" "Yes, please, if you would."

("Tôi có thể đóng cửa được không?" "Vâng, bạn có thể nếu bạn muốn.")

C. Trong mệnh đề còn lại (không phải mệnh đề if), chúng ta có thể sử dụng would ('d)/wouldn't

Ví dụ:

- If you took more exercise, you'd (=you would) probably feel healthier.

(Nếu bạn chăm tập thể dục hơn, bạn sẽ cảm thấy mạnh khỏe hơn.)

- Would you mind if I use your phone?

(Bạn vui lòng chứ nếu tôi sử dụng điện thoại của bạn?)

- I'm not tired enough to go to bed yet. I wouldn't sleep. (if I went to bed now)

(Tôi chưa quá mệt để phải đi ngủ đâu. Tôi sẽ không ngủ được. (nếu tôi đi ngủ bây giờ))

Với loại câu điều kiện này, bạn cũng có thể sử dụng could và might để thay thế cho would.

Ví dụ:

- If you took more exercise, you might feel healthier.

= it is possible that you would feel healthier

(= có thể bạn sẽ cảm thấy mạnh khỏe hơn đấy)

- If it stopped raining, we could go out.

(=we would be able to go out)

(Nếu trời tạnh mưa, chúng ta có thể đi chơi.)


D. Có thể sử dụng when thay cho if không?

Với hai loại câu điều kiện trong chương này (câu điều kiện loại 1 và câu điều kiện loại 2), chúng ta không sử dụng when để thay thế cho if.

Ví dụ:

- They would be offended if we didn't accept their invitation.

(KHÔNG nói 'when we didn't)

(Họ sẽ giận nếu chúng ta không chấp nhận lời mời của họ.)

- What would you do if you were bitten by a snake?

(KHÔNG nói 'when you were bitten')

(Bạn sẽ làm gì nếu bạn bị rắn cắn?)
