Diễn tả tình huống và hành động giả định, không có thật ở hiện tại hoặc tương lai.

→ Were + S + N/Adj, S + would/could/should… + V-inf.

If I were you, I would study harder for the exam.

→ Were I you, I would study harder for the exam.

If + S + V-ed, S + would/could/should… + V-inf.

→ Were + S + to V, S + would/could/should… + V-inf.

If she had more time, she could learn another language.

→ Were she to have more time, she could learn another language.

If it weren’t for + N/V-ing, S + would/could/should… + V-inf.

If they had left earlier, they would have avoided the traffic.

→ Had they left earlier, they would have avoided the traffic.

If it hadn’t been for + N/V-ing, S + would/could/might… + have + Vp2/V-ed.

→ Had it not been for + N/V-ing, S + would/could/might… + have + Vp2/V-ed.

Dùng để diễn tả giả thiết trái ngược với quá khứ, kết quả trái ngược với hiện tại.

Vì vậy, vế giả thiết dùng câu điều kiện loại 3, vế kết quả dùng câu điều kiện loại 2.

- If I had studied hard, I could pass the exam now.

- If Tom had proposed to her, they would be family now.

Dùng để diễn tả giả thiết trái ngược với hiện tại, kết quả trái ngược với quá khứ.

Vì vậy, vế giả thiết dùng câu điều kiện loại 2, vế kết quả dùng câu điều kiện loại 3.

- If he were a doctor, he could have saved her life.

- If she went to the party, she might have seen her friends.

But for/Without + N/V-ing: nếu không có/nếu không nhờ vào

But for/Without your help, I couldn’t have finished the project.

Even if: thậm chí nếu

I will help you even if I am busy.

If only + clause = S + wish(es) + clause: giá mà

If only I had more time to travel.

= I wish I had more time to travel.

In case + clause: phòng khi

Take an umbrella in case it rains later.

In case of + N: trong trường hợp

In case of fire, use the emergency exit.

Only if: với điều kiện là

You can go to the party only if you finish your homework first.

Or/Or else: nếu không thì

Wear your jacket, or/or else you’ll catch a cold.

Otherwise: nếu không thì

Provided that/Providing that/Supposed that/Supposing that = If: miễn là, giả sử

You can join the team provided that you train every day.

Unless + S + V (thể khẳng định) = If not: trừ khi, nếu không

Unless it rains, we’ll have a picnic in the park.

= If it doesn’t rain, we’ll have a picnic in the park.

Wonder if: phân vân liệu

I wonder if it will rain tomorrow (or not).

Whether…or not = If…or: liệu…hay không

Whether he likes it or not, he has to complete the task.

If clause + Imperative

Dùng mệnh đề If với câu yêu cầu/mệnh lệnh bắt đầu bằng động từ.

Don’t go to school late if you don’t want to be punished.

If + Adjective/Past participle

Dùng If với một tính từ hoặc một động từ quá khứ phân từ thay vì dùng một mệnh đề.

If decorated, the house will look beautiful.

(= If the house is decorated, it will look beautiful.)

If S + were to + V

Dùng ‘If sb were to do sth’, với ý nghĩa nhấn mạnh tình huống không thể xảy ra.

What would you do if you were to lose your job?

(= What would you do if you lost your job?)
