BASE jumping is an extreme sport. It is similar to skydiving, but there are important differences. Firstly, the jumps are much lower – usually no more than six hundred metres. And secondly, there is no aircraft. Instead, participants jump from some kind of bridge, building or cliff. The first BASE jump took place in 1912 in New York, when Frederick Law jumped for the Statue of Liberty. In the 1960s and 70s the sport became more popular, partly thanks to Carl Boenish. He made documentaries about BASE jumping and also thought of the name. He died in 1984 while he was jumping in Norway. BASE jumping is a thrilling experience, but it is very risky too.

1. What is the text about?

2. Is BASE jumping the same as skydiving?

III. READING

Task 1. Read the passage and write the answer True or False. (2,5 points)

Modem cinema audiences expect to see plenty of thrilling scenes in actions films. These scenes, which are known as “stunts”, are usually performed by stuntmen who are specially trained to do dangerous things safely. Anyone can crash a car, but if you are shooting a film, you have to be extremely precise, sometimes stopping right in front of the camera and the film crew.

At an early stage of the production, an expert stuntman is called in to work out the action scenes and form a team. He is the only person who can go against the wishes of the director although he will usually only do this in the interests of safety.

Many famous actors like to do the dangerous parts themselves, which produces better shots, since stuntmen don’t have to work in for the actors. Actors like to become involved in all the important aspects of the characters they are playing, but without the recent progress in safety equipment, insurance companies would never let them take the risk. To do their own stunts, actors need to be good athletes, but they must also be sensible and know their limits. If they were to be hurt, the film would come to a sudden halt.

1. “Stunts” are risky and breath-taking scenes in action films.

2. All the stunts are performed by sophisticated stuntmen.

3 A stuntman has a duty to follow all the instructions from the director in action scenes.

4. Insurance companies aren’t willing to let famous actors perform stunts without safety equipment.

5. If an actor were to be hurt, the film would continue with a stuntman replacing him.

Task 2. Read the text and complete the summary with ONE or TWO WORDS/ NUMBERS ONLY.

Gliders in the storm

In February 2007, Ewa Wiśnierska, a German paraglider, was in Australia with other paragliders preparing for the World Championships. One morning, as they were getting ready to take off, they noticed a thunderstorm approaching. However, they decided to carry on. As the best paragliders, they were skilful enough to keep away from some dark clouds. Unfortunately, as the competitors took off, the weather quickly got worse. Despite Ewa's attempt to escape, two enormous clouds came together and trapped her. They pulled her up inside the storm like a leaf in the wind. She flew higher and higher. "It was dark and I could hear lightning all around me." She reached nearly 10,000 m, higher than the top of Mount Everest, and then lost consciousness. At that height, the temperature was about -40°C and there was very little oxygen. Death seemed certain. For forty minutes, Ewa was unconscious. Waking up, she was still inside the storm. It was dark, and hailstones as big as tennis balls were flying past. But fortunately, her glider, which was spinning above her head, was still in one piece. Eventually, Ewa came out of the storm cloud and landed safely near a small farm. When her team reached her, she was 60 km away from the place where she took off. She was weak and covered in ice - but alive! Ewa was the luckiest woman in the world. There's no logical reason why she survived. Ewa had frostbite on her ears and legs, but a few days later, she competed in the World Championships.

Summary:

A German paraglider named Ewa Wiśnierska was stuck in a (1) in Australia while she was preparing for the World Championships. The clouds pulled her higher until she reached nearly (2), then lost (3). It was extremely cold and dark when she woke up. However, her (4) was unharmed. Eventually, Ewa came out of the storm cloud and landed safely near a small farm. National Parks

Have you ever been to a national park? Below are three of national parks in the world. They may be taken as reference for your travel list.

1. Cuc Phuong National Park, Vietnam

Cuc Phuong National Park is located 160 kilometres south west of Hanoi. It is the first of Vietnam's nine national parks to be established, and it contains over 200 square kilometres of rainforest. Tourists go there to study butterflies, visit caves, hike mountains and look at the 1,000-year-old tree. The best time to visit the park is during the dry season, from October to April, when the rainy season is over.

2. Nairobi National Park, Kenya

Nairobi National Park is Kenya's smallest park, but you may be surprised at the large variety of animals that live there. Visitors, especially children, can go there to learn how to recognise the different species of animals and plants. They also learn about the habits of animals and how one species is dependent upon another for survival. An interesting feature of this park is the Orphanage, where lots of orphaned or abandoned animals are taken care of.

3. Everglades National Park, USA

Everglades National Park is a sub-tropical wilderness in the southeastern United States. This national park is special because it has plants and animals from both tropical and temperate zones. Due to an increase in population and the use of nearby land for farming, there are toxic levels of chemicals in the water. This contamination has threatened the park and many of the animals in it.
