Phân biệt Older và Elder trong tiếng Anh
A. Phân biệt Older và Elder trong tiếng Anh
* Giống nhau:
- Hai từ này đều là tính từ có nghĩa lớn hơn, già hơn. Tuy nhiên dùng “elder” thì trang trọng hơn
Ví dụ: I have an older brother.
I have an elder brother.
* Khác nhau:
- Chúng ta dùng older khi muốn nói đến cái nghĩa chung là lớn tuổi hơn, già hơn, cũ hơn và older có thể dùng cho cả người và vật.
- Còn elder chỉ dùng để nói về người và thường được dùng để nói đến một thành viên nào đó trong gia đình.
Ví dụ: Tom looks older than he really is. (Tom trông có vẻ già hơn tuổi thật.)
My book is older than his book. (Quyển sách của tôi cũ hơn quyển sách của cậu ấy.)
My elder brother is a pilot. (Anh tôi là một phi công.)
- Older có thể dùng với cấu trúc so sánh hơn (older + than), Elder thì không được dùng cấu trúc này.
Ví dụ: Bella is older than I am. (đúng)
Bella is elder than I am. (sai)
- Elder có thể dùng như một danh từ (với nghĩa là người lớn tuổi), older thì không được dùng như một danh từ.
Ví dụ: You should respect the elders. (Bạn nên tôn trọng người lớn tuổi.)
