Lesson Four - Phonics (page 91)

A. DESIRED OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

1. Core competences

- Pronounce the sounds /ʊə/ and /aʊ/ on their own and in words.

- Identify the letters oor, our, and ou in the middle and at the end of words and associate them with the sounds /ʊə/ and /aʊ/.

- Differentiate between the sounds /ʊə/ and /aʊ/. Pronunciation in American English: /ʊr/ and /aʊ/. The British English IPA transcription for diphthong /ʊə / is used here. The pronunciation in American English is: /ʊr/.

2. General competences

- Communication and collaboration:work in pairs/groups to talk about words beginning with sounds/letters the teacher asks.

- Problem-solving and creativity: find out the difference between the sounds /ʊə/ and /aʊ/.

3. Attributes

- Kindness: help partners to complete learning tasks.

- Diligence: work hard to complete learning tasks.

- Honesty: tell the truth about feelings and emotions or play fair in games.

WARM-UP/REVIEW (5 minutes)

Aim: To motivate students and help students review the previous sounds and the words.

*Review the previous sounds and letters

- Ask students which letters they looked at in the previous lesson (ear and are) and which sound these letters represent (/ɪə/ and /eə/).

- Elicit words that contain that sound (ear, near, hear, scared, share, square).

- Ask students to read the words aloud.

- Praise students. Give comments.

- Task completed with excellence: Students can say sound and the words nicely.

- Task completed: Students can say sound and the words.

- Task uncompleted: Students are unable to say sound and the words.

- Answer which letters they looked at in the previous lesson (ear and are) and which sound these letters represent (/ɪə/ and /eə/).

- Say the words that contain that sound (ear, near, hear, scared, share, square).

- Read the words aloud.

PRESENTATION (10 minutes)

Aim: To help students pronounce the sounds /ʊə/ and /aʊ/ on their own and in words.

*Lead-in: Use Phonics cards 44-47 to introduce the letters and the words.

Flashcards (poor, tour, mouse, house)

- Hold up the poor, tour, mouse, and house phonics cards one at a time, saying the words for the class to repeat. Ask students what today’s sounds are (/ʊə/ and /aʊ/).

- Write the target words on the board. Point to one, and encourage the students to sound it out.

- Encourage the class to say the sounds to say the word.

- Use the same process with different students pointing to different words. students say t-o-u-r, m-o-u-s-e, and h-o-u-s-e.

- Check students’ pronunciation.

*Listen and point. Repeat (Track 147)

- Ask students to look at the words with the sounds oor, our, and ou.

- Play the first part of the recording and let students point to the pictures.

- Play the second part of the recording for students to repeat the sounds and words in chorus.

- Play the recording all the way through (more than once if needed) for students to point to the words and repeat them.

- Check students’ pronunciation. Praise students if they have done well.

- Task completed: Students can point and say the words.

- Task uncompleted: Students are unable to point and say the words.

- Look at the flashcards. Say the words. Answer what today’s sounds are (/ʊə/ and /aʊ/).

- Sound out the target words on the board.

- Say the sounds to say the word.

- Follow the teacher.

- Look at the words with the sounds oor, our, and ou.

- Listen to the first part of the recording and point to the pictures.

- Listen to the second part of the recording and repeat the sounds and words in chorus.

- Listen to the whole recording. Point to the words and repeat them.

PRACTICE (8 minutes)

Aim: To help students say the chant with the sounds /ʊə/ and /aʊ/ and improve their pronunciation.

*Listen and chant (Track 148)

- Ask questions about the pictures. Then, play the recording for students to listen to the chant.

- Play the recording again for students to say the chant. Have students point to the pictures in their books as they hear the words. Repeat (more than once if necessary).

- Play the chant once more as students follow in their books.

- Call two groups/students to perform for the class.

- Remark on students’ pronunciation.

- Ask students to say the words with the sounds/ʊə/ and /aʊ/.

- Check students’ pronunciation.
