Lesson One - Everyday English (page 96)

A. DESIRED OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

1. Core competences

- Learn some useful language for playing outside.

2. General competences

- Communication and collaboration:work in pairs/groups to act out their dialogues.

- Problem-solving and creativity: make some dialogues of students’ own.

3. Attributes

- Kindness: help partners to complete learning tasks.

- Diligence: work hard to complete learning tasks.

- Honesty: tell the truth about feelings and emotions or play fair in games.

- Responsibility: appreciate kindness.

- Leadership: collaborate with teachers to enhance language skills.

- May I go on the (swing), please? Be careful of the (ball).

- I’m on the (swing)! That’s good. Come down now.

WARM-UP/REVIEW (5 minutes)

Aim: To help students greet politely and review the park vocabulary.

*Game: “Musical cards”

Flashcards (ball, swing, seesaw, slide)

- Bring a selection of flashcards or pictures relating to the park vocabulary to the class. Hand them out to different students around the class.

- Play some lively music and ask students to pass them around to each other while the music is playing. It doesn’t matter if there is not a flashcard for every student.

- Stop the music suddenly and students should stop passing the cards. Ask students to look at the card nearest them and say what it is.

- Play the music and continue in the same way.

- Praise students if they have done well.

- Task completed with excellence: Students can say the park vocabulary correctly.

- Task completed: Students can say the park vocabulary.

- Task uncompleted: Students are unable to say the park vocabulary.

- Hold the flashcards.

- Listen to music. Pass them around to each other while the music is playing. It doesn’t matter if there is not a flashcard for every student.

- Stop passing the cards. Look at the card nearest them and say what it is.

- Continue to play the game.

PRESENTATION (10 minutes)

Aim: To help students listen and read the conversation about playing outside.

*Listen. Read and say. (Track 152)

- Ask students to say where the people are (in a park) and what they can see in the pictures.

- Play the recording for students to listen and follow the dialogue in their books.

- Play the recording again, pausing if necessary, for students to say the dialogue along with the recording.

- Ask students to practice the conversation in pairs.

- Ask pairs to act out the conversation for the class.

- Remark on students’ pronunciation. Praise students if they have done well.

- Task completed with excellence: Students can read the conversation correctly and fluently.

- Task completed: Students can read the conversation.

- Task uncompleted: Students are unable to read the conversation.

- Say where the people are (in a park) and what they can see in the pictures.

- Listen to the recording and follow the dialogue in their books.

- Listen to the recording again. Say the dialogue along with the recording.

- Practice the conversation in pairs.

- Act the conversation for the class.

PRACTICE (8 minutes)

Aim: To help students listen and number pictures in the correct order.

*Listen and number. (Track 153)

- Tell students that that they are going to listen to two conversations and that they should number pictures a–d in the correct order.

- Show students the pictures and example, checking that they understand the instructions.

- Play the recording for students to listen and write the numbers next to the letters in pencil.

- Ask students what each of the people is saying.

- Confirm the correct answers. Give comments.

PRODUCTION (10 minutes)

Aim: To help students ask and answer the questions for permission.

*Look at the park objects. Ask and answer. (page 96)

- Ask students to work in pairs to act out dialogues of their own.

- Ask two students to read out the example dialogue. In pairs, ask students to read the example dialogue, then point to the pictures of the things in the park and ask and answer as in the example.

- Monitor students’ performance. Invite some pairs to act out their dialogues for the class.

- Check students’ pronunciation. Praise them.

- Practicing asking and answering for permission.

- Prepare for the next lesson (Fluency time! 4 - Lesson 2).
