A. DESIRED OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

1. Core competences

- Learn some useful content and language about dividing shapes

- Make a poster reflecting math concepts related to dividing shapes.

2. General competences

- Communication and collaboration:work in pairs/groups to talk about thing’s colors.

- Problem-solving and creativity:find out new colors.

WARM-UP/REVIEW (5 minutes)

Aim: To motivate students and help students review food words.

*Game: “Slow reveal”

Pictures (orange, pizza, sandwich, cake)

- Explain how to play the game.

- Use pictures from the previous lessons.

- Put a picture on the board and cover it with a piece of card.

- Very slowly move the paper to reveal the picture, little by little.

- Ask What’s this?The first student to guess correctly comes to the front to choose the next picture.

- Continue until practicing all the vocabulary in the set.

- Give comments. Praise students.

- Task completed with excellence: Students can say the words correctly.

- Task completed: Students can say the words.

- Task uncompleted: Students are unable to say the words.

- Listen to the teacher’s instructions.

- Look at a picture on the board.

- Observe what the teacher does.

- Continue playing the game.

PRESENTATION (10 minutes)

Aim: To help students identify the vocabulary about dividing shapes.

*Lead-in: Use Flashcards 133-137 to present the vocabulary.

- Write some simple sums on the board.

E.g.

4 + 3 = __

5 + 1 = __

2 + 3 = __

- Point to each of the symbols and present the words plus and equals. Then, ask students to come up and complete the sums.

*Listen and point. Repeat. (Track 154)

- Point to the pictures. Say the words and let the students repeat.

- Play the recording. The students point to the correct words.

- Ask students to repeat each word after they hear it.

- Call some students to read the words aloud.

- Praise students if they have done well.

PRACTICE (8 minutes)

Aim: To help students read the paragraphs and learn some useful content and language about dividing shapes.

*Listen and read. (Track 155)

- Play the recording for students to follow in their books.

- Play the recording again. Ask comprehension questions, e.g. How many (thirds) are there in a whole?

- Elicit the shapes students can see and how they are divided.

- Ask students to read each paragraph for the class.

- Ask students to check their friend’s pronunciation. Praise students.

- Listen to the recording to follow in their books.

- Listen to the recording again. Answer the question.

PRODUCTION (10 minutes)

Aim: To help students make a poster reflecting math concepts related to dividing shapes.

*What are things you can divide into halves, thirds, and quarters? Make a poster. (page 97)

- Explain that we want to find things we can divide into two, three, or four pieces. Ask students to think about items from around the classroom. Brainstorm a list as a class.

- Put students in groups to make a poster. Give each group a large piece of poster paper, some scissors, and some pieces of colored paper for students to cut.

- Model the activity by drawing a circle and then drawing the lines to split it into halves. Repeat with other shapes, drawing the lines for thirds and halves.

- Tell students to do the same and then cut their shapes to glue onto their posters.

- Walk around to help. Give them glue when they are ready.

- Ask students to label each part of the poster with halves, thirds, and quarters.

- Praise students if they have done well.

- Task uncompleted: Students are unable to make a poster.

- Think about items from around the classroom. Brainstorm a list as a class.

- Work in groups. Make a poster.

- Label each part of the poster with halves, thirds, and quarters.
