I. OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

1. Knowledge and skills

- use the sentence structures “What’s he/ she doing?” and “He’s/ She’s _____
(verb + -ing).” to ask and answer questions about what someone is doing.

- sing a song with the sentence structures “What’s he/ she doing?” and “He’s/ She’s _____ (verb + -ing).”.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP & REVIEW (5 minutes)

a. Objectives

- To review the sentence structure “He’s/She’s _____ (verb + -ing).” to ask and answer questions about what someone is doing.

b. Content

- Game: Lucky colours

c. Expected outcomes

- Pupils can correctly remember the sentence structure “He’s/She’s _____ (verb + -ing).” to ask and answer questions about what someone is doing.

Game: Lucky colours

- Prepare pictures of people doing the activities. Run through the pictures and the points on their backs from 1 to 10.

- Divide the class into two teams.

- Have pupils from each team choose the colour containing the picture and talk about what someone’s doing in the picture.

E.g. He’s colouring a square.       

- Get corresponding points for their team.

- Continue with the other pupils.

- The team that gets more points wins. Praise the winner.

 

- Work in two teams.

- Choose the colour containing the picture and talk about what someone’s doing in the picture.

 

- Get points for their team.

 

- Continue playing the game.

- Praise the winner.

2. ACTIVITY 1: KNOWLEDGE CONSTRUCTION (10 minutes)

a. Objectives

- To use the sentence structures “What’s he/she doing?” and “He’s/She’s _____ (verb + -ing).” to ask and answer questions about what someone is doing.

b. Content

- Activity 6. Listen and repeat.

c. Expected outcomes

- Pupils can use the sentence structures “What’s he/she doing?” and “He’s/She’s _____ (verb + -ing).” to ask and answer questions about what someone is doing.

Activity 6. Listen and repeat. (Track 28)

Step 1: Draw pupils’ attention to the picture (say “Look at the picture.”). Say “What’s she doing? She’s colouring a square.”.

Step 2: Have pupils point to the sentence (say “Point to the sentence.”). Play the recording and encourage pupils to repeat (say “Listen and repeat.”). Do this several times, with pupils repeating both individually and in chorus. Correct their pronunciation if necessary, and praise them when their pronunciation is good.

- Pupils look at the picture.

- The picture shows a girl colouring a square and a boy doing a quiz on the board. Another boy and girl are asking and answering questions about what they are doing. The boy is asking “What’s she/he doing?” The girl is saying “She’s colouring a square.” and “He’s doing a quiz.”

3. ACTIVITY 2: PRACTICE (8 minutes)

a. Objectives

- To use the sentence structures “What’s he/ she doing?” and “He’s/ She’s _____ (verb + -ing).” to ask and answer questions about what someone is doing.

b. Content

- Activity 7. Let’s talk.

c. Expected outcomes

- Pupils can use the sentence structures “What’s he/ she doing?” and “He’s/ She’s _____ (verb + -ing).” to ask and answer questions about what someone is doing.

Activity 7. Let’s talk.

Step 1: Write “What’s _____?” on the board. Underneath the question, write “He’s _____.” and “She’s _____.”.

Step 2: Have pupils look at Picture a (say “Look at Picture a.”). Say “What’s _____?” and encourage pupils to complete the question. If they answer correctly, confirm by saying “What’s she doing?” Then encourage pupils to answer using the full sentence structure. When they answer correctly, confirm by saying “She’s answering a question.”

Step 3: Repeat Step 2 for Pictures b and c.

Step 4: Have pupils work in pairs to look at each picture and practise asking and answering questions about what the people are doing. Go around the class to offer support and feedback.

- Pupils follow the teacher demonstrating the activity.

- Pupils follow the teacher’s instructions.

- Pupils work in pairs to look at each picture and practise asking and answering questions about what the people are doing.

There are three pictures showing (a) a girl answering a question, (b) a boy doing a quiz, and (c) a girl colouring a square, together with the incomplete sentence structures “What’s he/she doing?” and “He’s/She’s _____ (verb + -ing).”.

4. ACTIVITY 3: PRACTICE (7 minutes)

a. Objectives

- To sing a song with the sentence structures “What’s he/ she doing?” and “He’s/ She’s _____ (verb + -ing).”

b. Content

- Activity 8. Let’s sing.

c. Expected outcomes

- Pupils can sing a song with the sentence structures “What’s he/she doing?”
and “He’s/ She’s _____ (verb + -ing).”

Activity 8. Let’s sing. (Track 29)

Step 1: Draw pupils’ attention to the picture (say “Look at the picture.”). Say “What’s he/she doing?” and encourage pupils to answer using the full sentence structure.

Step 2: Play the recording of the song to familiarise pupils with the rhythm and melody (say “Listen.”).

Step 3: Read the song line by line and encourage pupils to repeat (say “Listen and repeat.”). Do this several times, with pupils repeating both individually and in chorus. Correct their pronunciation if necessary, and praise them when their pronunciation is good.

Step 4: Say “Let’s sing!”. Play the recording line by line and encourage pupils to sing along.

Step 5: Have pupils work in groups to make up actions for the song. Invite a few groups to perform the song for the class.

- Pupils look at the picture and answer using the full sentence structure.

 

 

 

- Pupils listen to the recording of the song to familiarise with the rhythm and melody.

- Pupils read the song line by line.

 

 

 

 

 

- Pupils listen to the recording line by line and sing along.

- Pupils work in groups to make up actions for the song. Pupils perform the song for the class.

- The lyrics and the recording of the song about what the pupils in the classroom are doing.

- The picture shows a classroom. The teacher is asking a question and a girl is answering. A boy is colouring a square on the board. Another boy is doing a quiz.

5. FUN CORNER AND WRAP-UP (5 minutes)

* Option 1: Game: A lucky box

- Prepare some pictures (square, quiz, question). Ask students to say the names of the pictures. Put each picture in a box. There are two lucky boxes.

- Call two pupils to choose a box, then ask and answer questions about what someone is doing.

- If the pupils ask and answer the questions correctly, they will get gifts. If they choose a lucky box, they will get gifts and will not ask and answer questions.

- Continue the game until all the boxes are opened.

* Option 2: Game: Facing game

- Ask students to stand up.

- Let students give some sounds of the letters (B/b, K/k, S/s, R/r, Q/q) they have learnt.

- Say the sound of a letter. Ask pupils to say a word related to the sound of that letter.

- If the student is able to give the correct answer, he/ she will still stand and continue to play the game. If the student is unable to give the correct answer or has the same answer, he/ she will be eliminated from the game.

- Continue to play the game until a winner is selected. Praise the winner.
