I. OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:

1. Knowledge and skills

 - correctly pronounce the sound of the letter I/i (/aɪ/), the words riding, driving, sliding and say the sentence structure “He’s/She’s/They’re _____ (verb + -ing).”

 - recognise target words and sentence structure while listening.

 - complete the words riding, driving and sliding.

2. Competences

- Communication and collaboration: work in pairs or groups to complete the learning tasks.

- Self-control & independent learning: perform listening and writing tasks.

- Problem-solving and creativity: confidently answer appropriate questions.

3. Attributes

- Show their love and interest in outdoor activities.

- Be careful of doing outdoor activities to keep healthy and happy.

- Show their knowledge about recognising information.

III. PROCEDURES

1. WARM-UP & REVIEW (5 minutes)

a. Objectives:

- To review the words with the sound of the letter I/i (riding, driving, sliding).

b. Content:

- Game: “Matching”.

c. Expected outcomes:

- Pupils can identify and say the words with the sound of the letter I/i (riding, driving, sliding).

d. Organisation:

Game: “Matching”

- Prepare some pictures about sliding, riding, and driving.

- Divide the class into two groups.

- Have each group match the words with the suitable pictures.

- Check the answers as a class.

- The group finishes first and has more correct answers will win. Praise the winner.

- Then have pupils read all the words aloud.

- Follow the teacher’s instructions.

- Work in two groups.

- Match the words with the suitable pictures.

- Check the answers as a class.

- Praise the winner.

2. ACTIVITY 1 (10 minutes)

a. Objectives:

- To say a chant with the sound of the letter I/i (/ai/), the words riding, driving, sliding and the sentence structure He’s/She’s/They’re _____ (verb + -ing).”

b. Content:

- Activity 3. Listen and chant.

c. Expected outcomes:

- Pupils can say a chant with the sound of the letter I/i (/ai /), the words riding, driving, sliding and the sentence structure He’s/She’s/They’re _____ (verb + -ing).”

Activity 3. Listen and chant. (Track 59)

Step 1: Draw pupils’ attention to the picture and have them point to the bike (say “Look at the picture. Point to the bike.”).

Step 2: Say “She’s riding a bike.” and encourage pupils to repeat. To reinforce their understanding, mime riding a bike.

Step 3: Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for driving and sliding.

Step 4: Play the recording of the chant to familiarize pupils with the words and rhythm (say “Listen.”).

Step 5: Have pupils point to the first line of the chant (say “Point to line one.”). Play the recording of the first line and encourage pupils to chant (say “Listen and chant.”).

Step 6: Repeat Step 5 for the other lines of the chant.

Step 7: Play the recording in full and encourage pupils to chant (say “Listen and chant.”). Pupils can clap along or do other actions to help them keep the rhythm.

Step 8: Divide the class into two teams. The teams take it in turns to chant a line. The whole class can clap along or do other actions.

- Pupils look at the picture and point to the bike.

 

 

- Pupils listen and repeat the sentence.

- Pupils follow the teacher’s instructions.

- Pupils listen to the recording of the chant to familiarize with the words and rhythm.

- Pupils point to the first line of the chant. Pupils listen to the first line and chant.

- Pupils listen to the recording in full and chant.

- Pupils work in two teams and take turns to chant a line. The whole class can clap along or do other actions.

- The lyrics and the recording of the chant about the playground.

- The picture shows a girl riding a bike, a boy driving a car and two boys sliding down a slide.

3. ACTIVITY 2 (8 minutes)

a. Objectives:

- To recognise the words riding, driving, sliding and the sentence structure “He’s/She’s/They’re _____ (verb + -ing). while listening.

- Activity 4. Listen and tick.

c. Expected outcomes:

- Pupils can recognise the words riding, driving, sliding and the sentence structure “He’s/She’s/They’re _____ (verb + -ing). while listening.

Activity 4. Listen and tick. (Track 60)

Step 1: Have pupils look at the pictures and say what the children are doing (say “Point and say. What are they doing?”). When pupils answer correctly, confirm by saying “sliding/playing football/riding a bike/driving a car”.

Step 2: Play the recording and allow pupils time to complete the activity (say “Listen and tick.”).

Step 3: Check the answers by asking “a or b?” When pupils answer correctly, confirm by saying “1a. They’re sliding.”/ “2a. She’s riding a bike.” and encourage them to repeat.

- Pupils look at the pictures and say what the children are doing.

 

 

 

 

- Pupils listen to the recording and complete the activity.

- Pupils check the answers and repeat the sentences.

4. ACTIVITY 3 (7 minutes)

a. Objectives:

- To complete the words riding, driving and sliding.

b. Content

- Activity 5. Write and say.

c. Expected outcomes:

- Pupils can complete the words riding, driving and sliding.

d. Organisation

Activity 5. Write and say.

Step 1: Write the letter i (lowercase) on the board and say “i” (/aɪ/).

 Step 2: Write the letter i (lowercase) on the board again, but this time more slowly. Invite a few pupils to come to the front of the class and write the letter i (lowercase) on the board.

 Step 3: Draw pupils’ attention to the pictures and labels (say “Look and write.”). Allow pupils time to complete the activity. Go around the class to offer support and feedback.

 Step 4: Have pupils say the words (say “Say the words.”)

- Pupils follow the teacher demonstrating the activity.

 

- Pupils come to the front of the class and write the letter i (lower case) on the board.

 

 

 

- Pupils look at the pictures and labels and complete the activity.

 

 

 

- Pupils say the words.

- Pictures of two girls riding bikes, two boys driving cars and four children sliding, with the labels r__ding, dr__ving and sl__ding for completion.

5. FUN CORNER AND WRAP-UP (5 minutes)

* Option 1/ Game: “Lips reading”

- Place the cards of these words (riding, driving, sliding) on the board.

- Divide the class into three or four groups.

- Say the words softly, and have pupils guess and call out the name of the word that teacher says.

- The pupil who gives the correct answer gets one point for his/her group. The group with the most points is the winner.

* Option 2/ Game: “Flashcard Race”

- Stick many different pictures on the board.

- Divide the class into four teams. Have each team make a line.

- Call out a word, e.g. riding. Have a pupil from each team race to the board and choose a correct picture suitable with the word, then raise the picture to the class.

- Have the class check the answer.

- The team with the correct picture gets one point.

- Continue the game until all the words are said.

- The team gets the most points is the winner.
