“May” và "Might” dùng để chỉ những hành động/sự việc có thể xảy ra ở tương lai. Nhưng ta chỉ dùng "Might" khi sự việc đó không xảy ra.

1. Dùng "may" và "might" để nói về những hành động hay sự việc có thể xảy ra ở tương lai

Ví dụ 1:

I haven't decided yet where to spend my holidays. I may go to Ireland.

Tôi vẫn chưa quyết định đi nghỉ ở đâu. Có thể tôi đi Ireland.

Ví dụ 2:

Take an umbrella with you when you go out. It might rain later.

Nhớ mang theo dù khi bạn ra ngoài. Trời có thể mưa đó.

2. Thường ta có thể dùng "may" hay "might" đều được cả.

Ví dụ 1:

I may go to Ireland hay I might go to Ireland.

Tôi có thể sẽ đi Ireland.

Ví dụ 2:

Jane might be able to help you hay Jane may be able to help you.

Jane có thể sẽ sẵn sàng để giúp anh.

Nhưng chúng ta chỉ dùng "might" (không dùng "may") khi sự việc đó không xảy ra (unreal situation)

3. May/might có thể được dùng ở những câu điều kiện thay cho will/would để chỉ một sự có thể thay vì một kết quả chắc chắn.

Ví dụ:

If he sees you he will stop. (chắc chắn) - Nếu anh ấy thấy cậu, anh ấy sẽ dừng lại.

If he sees you he may stop. (không chắc chắn) - Nếu anh ấy thấy cậu, anh ấy có thể dừng lại.
