1. Must

- Cấu trúc: S + must + V nguyên thể (Ai đó phải làm gì)

- Cách dùng: Must do something thường được dịch "phải làm điều gì". Sự bắt buộc làm gì này xuất phát từ cảm xúc cá nhân, người nói cho rằng mình phải làm như vậy và không có lựa chọn nào khác. Nếu không, anh ta sẽ nhận lấy một hậu quả (consequence).

Ví dụ: I must phone my sister. (Tôi phải gọi điện cho chị gái tôi - nếu không chị sẽ giận vì tôi không quan tâm)

*Chú ý: mustn’t do st = không được làm gì

2. Need

- Cấu trúc: S + need(s) + to V (Ai đó cần làm gì)

- Cách dùng: miêu tả ai đó cần, nên làm việc gì để mang lại lợi ích (benefit), mọi việc trở nên tốt đẹp hơn

Ví dụ: I need to do my homework. (Tôi cần làm bài tập về nhà - vì tôi cảm thấy làm bài tập khiến tôi hiểu bài hơn)

*Chú ý: Needn’t do st = không cần thiết phải làm gì

3. Have to

- Cấu trúc: S + have/has to + V nguyên thể (Ai đó phải làm gì)

- Cách dùng: Cách diễn đạt này mang tính cấp thiết nhất. Người nói xem việc này là một nhiệm vụ, do quy định nào đó bắt buộc. "Must do something" mang cảm xúc chủ quan còn "have to do something" mang tính cưỡng chế hơn

Ví dụ: I have to do my homework. (Tôi phải làm bài tập về nhà - vì giáo viên yêu cầu, nếu không làm sẽ bị phạt)

*Chú ý: Trong nhiều trường hợp, "must" và "have to" được chấp nhận dùng thay thế cho nhau.
