1. Định nghĩa
- Mạo từ nằm trước danh từ và chỉ ra danh từ đó nói đến một đối tượng xác định hay không
- Tiếng Anh có 3 mạo từ:
• “The” dùng để chỉ đối tượng xác định hay còn gọi là mạo từ xác định (Definite article)
• “A/ An” được dùng nói đến một đối tượng chưa xác định được hay còn gọi là mạo từ không xác định. (Indefinite article)
- Mạo từ Zero (Zero article) không có mạo từ đứng trước danh từ: thường áp dụng cho danh từ không đếm được (uncountable nouns) và danh từ đếm được ở dạng số nhiều: rice, tea, people, clothes
2. Mạo từ xác định “The”
"The" được dùng cho cả danh từ đếm được - countable noun(s) (số ít lẫn số nhiều) và danh từ không đếm được (uncountable nouns)
Ta dùng “the” ở những trường hợp:
- Vật thể hay nhóm vật thể, yếu tố là duy nhất.
Eg: the sun, the world ….
- Khi nhắc lại đặt “the” trước danh từ vừa mới được đề cập.
Eg: I saw an elephant. The elephant looks so cute.
- Danh từ được xác định bằng một cụm từ hoặc một mệnh đề trước đó, thì đặt “the” trước danh từ
Eg: The teacher that I learnt
- “The” đứng trước một danh từ chỉ một vật riêng biệt
Eg: My mother is cooking in the kitchen
- “The” được đặt trước khi so sánh nhất và trước "first" (thứ nhất), "second" (thứ hai), "only" (duy nhất) khi các từ này đóng vai trò là tính từ hoặc đại từ.
Eg: The first person (người đầu tiên)
- "The" + Danh từ số ít đại diện cho một nhóm động vật, loài vật hay đồ vật
Eg: The shark is one of the endangered species.
- "The" đứng trước một thành viên của một nhóm người.
Eg: The small stores are finding business increasingly difficult.
- "The" + Danh từ số ít đứng trước động từ và dùng với đại từ số ít (He/ She/ It)
Eg: The first-class customer pays more so that she enjoys the qualified service.
- "The" + Tính từ: chỉ một nhóm người, một tầng lớp xã hội
Eg: The old (người già), the rich (người giàu) …..
- The" đứng trước những tên riêng như: biển, sông, quần đảo, dãy núi, tên gọi số nhiều của các nước, sa mạc, miền
Eg: The Pacific (Thái Bình Dương)
- "The" đứng trước những tên gọi gồm Danh từ + of + danh từ
Eg: The United States of America (Nước Mỹ)
- "The" + họ (ở dạng số nhiều): gia đình ...
Eg: The Bills = Gia đình nhà Bill (vợ chồng Bill và các con)
- “The” đặt trước tên của tổ chức, nhiều bang
Eg: The United Nations. (Liên hợp quốc), The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Tổ chức Giáo dục, Khoa học và Văn hoá của Liên Hợp Quốc.)
- “The” đứng trước tên đội hợp xướng, dàn nhạc cổ điển, ban nhạc phổ thông
Eg: the Beatles ………….
3. Mạo từ không xác định – A/An
- “A” đứng trước một phụ âm hoặc một từ có âm bắt đầu là phụ âm.
Eg: a book : một quyển sách, a student: một học sinh …………
- “An” đứng trước một nguyên âm (a, e, i, o, u) hoặc âm /h/ câm. Ngoài ra, nó cũng đứng trước các mẫu tự đặc biệt đọc giống như nguyên âm.
Eg: an apple: một quả táo, an SOS: một tín hiệu cấp cứu ………..
4. Trường hợp KHÔNG sử dụng “A, An”
- Trước danh từ số nhiều.
Eg: I have cats. (Tôi có những con mèo.)
- Trước danh từ không đếm được.
Eg: My father gave me good advice. (Bố tôi đã cho tôi những lời khuyên hay.)
- Không dùng “A, An” trước tên gọi của các bữa ăn, trừ khi có một tính từ đi kèm với nó.
Eg: I have dinner at 7 p.m. (Tôi ăn tối lúc 7 giờ.)
5. Trường hợp không sử dụng “The”
- Trước tên của một quốc gia, châu lục, tên hồ, tên núi, tên đường.
Eg: I live in Nguyen Trai street. (Tôi sống ở đường Nguyễn Trãi.)
- Trước một danh từ không đếm được hoặc một danh từ số nhiều theo nghĩa chung, không chỉ một trường hợp nào.
Eg: I like noodles. (Tôi thích phở.)
- Trước tên gọi các bữa ăn.
Eg: I invited Jane to dinner. (Tôi mời Jane đến ăn tối.)
- Trước: autumn (mùa thu), spring (mùa xuân), last night (đêm qua), from beginning to end (từ đầu tới cuối), next year (năm sau), from left to right (từ trái qua phải).
Eg: I slept late last night. (Đêm qua tôi đã ngủ trễ.)

Hi John,
