Lesson Four - Phonics (page 85)

A. DESIRED OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

1. Core competences

- Pronounce the sounds /ɪə/ and /eə/ on their own and in words.

- Identify the letters ear and are within words and associate them with the sounds /ɪə/ and /eə/.

- Pronunciation in American English: /ɪr/ and /ɛr/. The British English IPA transcription for diphthong /ɪə / is used here. The pronunciation in American English is: /ɪr/.

2. General competences

- Communication and collaboration:work in pairs/groups to talk about words beginning with sounds/letters the teacher asks.

- Problem-solving and creativity: find out the difference between the sounds /ɪə/ and /eə/.

3. Attributes

Kindness: help partners to complete learning tasks.

- Diligence: work hard to complete learning tasks.

- Honesty: tell the truth about feelings and emotions or play fair in games.

- Responsibility: appreciate kindness.

WARM-UP/REVIEW (5 minutes)

Aim: To motivate students and help students review the previous phonics and words.

*Review the previous phonics and words

- Ask students which letters they looked at in the previous phonics lesson (oa) and (oy) and which sounds these letters represent (/oʊ/ and /ɔɪ/).

- Elicit words that contain those sounds (boat, goat, toy, boy).

- Praise students. Give comments.

- Task completed with excellence: Students can say the chant nicely.

- Task completed: Students can say the chant.

- Task uncompleted: Students are unable to say the chant.

- Answer which letters they looked at in the previous phonics lesson (oa) and (oy) and which sounds these letters represent (/oʊ/ and /ɔɪ/).

- Follow the teacher.

PRESENTATION (10 minutes)

Aim: To help students pronounce the sounds /ɪə/ and /eə/ on their own and in words.

*Lead-in: Use Phonics cards 38-43 to introduce the letters and the words.

Phonic cards (ear, are)

Flashcards (ear, near, hear, scared, share, square)

- Hold up the ears, near, hear, scared, share, and square phonics cards one at a time, saying the words for the class to repeat. Ask students what today’s sounds are (/ɪə/ and /eə/).

- Write the target words on the board. Invite a student to come up to the board.

- Encourage the class to sound out and say the words individually.

- Use the same process with different students.

- Check students’ pronunciation.

- Play the second part of the recording for students to repeat the sounds and words in chorus.

- Play the recording all the way through (more than once if needed) for students to point to the words and repeat them.

- Check students’ pronunciation. Praise students if they have done well.

- Task uncompleted: Students are unable to point and say the words.

- Repeat the words. Answer what today’s sounds are (/ɪə/ and /eə/).

- Look at the target words on the board. Come up to the board.

- Sound out and say the words individually.

- Look at the words with the sounds ear and are.

- Listen to the first part of the recording and point to the pictures.

- Listen to the second part of the recording and repeat the sounds and words in chorus.

- Listen to the whole recording. Point to the words and repeat them.

PRACTICE (8 minutes)

Aim: To help students say the chant and pronounce the words with the sounds /ɪə/ and /eə/; improve their pronunciation.

*Listen and chant (Track 138)

- Elicit what students can see in the picture. Then, play the recording for students to listen to the chant.

- Play the recording again for students to say the chant. Have the students point to the pictures in their books as they hear the words. Repeat (more than once if necessary).

- Play the chant once more as students follow in their books.

- Call two groups/students to perform for the class.

- Remark on students’ pronunciation.

*Read the chant again. Say the words with ear and are. (page 85)

- Ask students to find other examples of ear in words and to write these words in their notebooks.

- Ask students to say the words with ear and are.

- Check students’ pronunciation.
