1. Do you enjoy scary films, stories or fairground rides?

2. Do you find any of these things scary? dogs, heights, large crowds, snakes, spiders, water.

(Bạn sợ cái nào sau đây không? chó, độ cao, đám đông, rắn, nhện, nước.)

A: Personally, I love scary films! The adrenaline rush they give is so exhilarating every time.

B: Oh, really? I’m not a huge fan of scary films. I feel uneasy just thinking of watching them.

A: Fair enough! How about stories or fairground rides? Do you enjoy those?

B: I don’t mind scary stories, but I usually avoid fairground rides. They’re too intense for me.

A: Are you afraid of dogs?

B: Not at all, I love dogs! They’re so friendly and comforting.

A: That’s great! How about heights? Do they make you nervous?

B: Definitely, my legs tremble at just 2 meters high up! I’m terribly afraid of heights!

A: Wow. What about large crowds? Do you find them intimidating?

B: Yeah, I don’t like being among large crowds either. I tend to feel overwhelmed, I guess it’s because I’m introverted.

A: I see. And what about snakes, spiders, or water? Do any of those scare you?

B: Snakes and spiders definitely give me the creeps, but I’m fine with water.

A: Cá nhân mình rất thích xem phim kinh dị! Cảm giác adrenaline dâng trào mỗi lần xem thật sự rất phấn khích.

B: Thế à? Mình thì không phải fan của phim kinh dị. Chỉ nghĩ đến việc xem mấy phim đó thôi cũng thấy khó chịu rồi.

A: Ừm, thế còn chuyện kinh dị hay mấy trò đáng sợ ở hội chợ thì sao? Bạn có thích mấy thứ đó không?

B: Mình không ngại mấy câu chuyện đáng sợ, nhưng mà không chơi mấy trò ở hội chợ đâu. Mình bị căng thẳng khi chơi mấy trò đó.

A: Bạn có sợ chó không?

B: Không hề, mình rất yêu chó! Chúng thân thiện và đem lại cảm giác an ủi nữa.

A: Vậy còn độ cao thì sao? Có làm bạn lo lắng không?

B: Có chứ, chỉ đứng cách mặt đất 2 mét thôi là chân mình run bần bật rồi! Mình sợ độ cao kinh khủng!

A: Chà. Còn đám đông thì sao? Bạn có thấy đám đông đáng sợ không?

B: Có, mình cũng không thích đứng giữa đám đông. Mình hay bị choáng ngợp, chắc tại vì mình hướng nội.

A: Hiểu rồi. Thế còn rắn, nhện, hay nước thì sao? Bạn có sợ mấy thứ đó không?

B: Rắn với nhện làm mình nổi cả da gà, nhưng nước thì không sao.

Listening Strategy

Speakers often use intonation to express their opinion or attitude about the statements they make. Pay attention to the speaker’s tone of voice and the intonation they use to find out how they feel about their subject.

Người nói thường dùng ngữ điệu để bày tỏ quan điểm hoặc thái độ về những phát biểu mà họ đưa ra. Hãy chú ý đến giọng điệu và ngữ điệu của người nói để đoán xem họ cảm thấy thế nào về chủ đề đang nói.

1. Max: A horror story. Great, lan. They’re so interesting

2. Jill: Oh shush, Max. Fantastic! How scary is it?

3. lan: Well, whatever. I’m not saying it isn’t true. It could easily be true.

4. Caro: Oh, dear. I don’t like this story already.

*Nghĩa của các tính từ:

- angry (adj): tức giận

- enthusiastic (adj): nhiệt tình

- nervous (adj): lo lắng

- patient (adj): kiên nhẫn

- sarcastic (adj): mỉa mai

- surprised (adj): ngạc nhiên

1. Qualifying an opinion

Rising intonation can give the spoken words a slightly modified opinion:

2. Flat voice for sarcasm or irony

If we use a flat tone, we mean the opposite to the words we use:

Brilliant! (nâng giọng) (You mean it.)

Briliant. (giọng bình bình) (You don’t mean it.)
