A. DESIRED OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

- Identify things people do to get ready for a celebration.

- Use these words and phrases in the context of a song.

WARM-UP/REVIEW (5 minutes)

Aim: To motivate students and help students to remember the words related to celebrations.

*Game: “What’s missing?”

- Introduce the game.

- Place some flashcards on the board (play, dance, sing, eat, talk, watch).

- Model the activity first.

- Have students close their eyes.

- Remove one of the pictures.

- Students have to remember and say the missing pictures.

- Give the first team to guess correctly one point.

- The team that gets the most points wins. Praise the winner.

- Ask students to read the words aloud.

- Task uncompleted: Students are unable to say the words.

- Listen to the teacher’s instructions.

- Look at some flashcards on the board.

PRESENTATION (10 minutes)

Aim: To help students identify things people do to get ready for a celebration and improve students’ pronunciation skills.

*Lead-in: “Simon says...”

- Ask the students to stand behind their desks.

- Explain that you’re going to give instructions. If the instruction starts with the words Simon says …, students must do as you say. If not, they should stand still and wait for the next instruction. Any student who gets this wrong is out of the game and must sit down.

- Give an instruction, e.g. Simon says I’m brushing my hair. Simon says I’m washing my car.

- Intermittently, insert an instruction that is not preceded by Simon says to see if any students follow the instruction.

- Continue the game until there is only a small group of winners left standing.

*Listen and point. Repeat (Track 97)

- Point to the pictures. Say the words and let the students repeat.

- Remark on students’ pronunciation.

- Ask students to look at the pictures. Point to each one and ask What is he / she doing? Help students to answer.

- Read the title out loud. Ask students to think about the pictures and then elicit what getting ready means.

- Play the song all the way through for the students to listen.

- Play it again as they follow the words in their books.

- Read each line of the song out loud for students to repeat.

- Play the recording for students to sing along.

- Call on two groups/students to perform for the class.

- Check students’ pronunciation. Praise students if they have done well.

*Sing and do

- Ask students to look at the pictures and tell which action to do for each verse of the song.

- Call some students to sing and do the actions in front of the class.

- Praise students. Give comments.
