Keeping Your Home Safe: Simple Steps to Deter Burglars
In recent times, our community has faced a rise in the number of home burglaries. This troubling trend highlights the need for all of us to take proactive steps to secure our homes and protect our loved ones. Here are several effective measures you can implement to minimize the risk of your home becoming a target for thieves.
Lock Your Doors and Windows: It may sound obvious, but the first step in home security is to ensure that all doors and windows are locked, especially when you are away or sleeping. Surprisingly, many burglaries happen because intruders simply walk through unlocked doors. Double-check locks on all entry points, and consider upgrading to high-quality deadbolts.
Light Up Your Home: A well-lit home is a major deterrent for burglars. Install motion-sensor lights around the perimeter of your house, particularly at entry points. These lights can startle potential intruders, making them think twice about breaking in.
Install an Alarm System: Alarm systems are great tools for home security. They not only alert you and your neighbors of a possible intrusion but also can directly notify the police. Many modern systems include cameras that you can monitor via your smartphone, giving you peace of mind no matter where you are.
Keep Valuables Out of Sight: Avoid leaving expensive items where they can be easily seen from outside. If a burglar sees valuable items through a window, it might tempt them more. Always store such items away from view and use curtains or blinds to cover your windows, especially at night.
Be Mindful About Social Media: Be cautious about what you post on social media. Announcing vacations or trips can signal to burglars that your house will be empty. It’s best to post about trips after you have returned home.
Get to Know Your Neighbors: Neighbors can be invaluable in keeping an eye on your home when you are not around. Joining a neighborhood watch program can significantly enhance security through mutual cooperation and alertness.
By implementing these simple measures, you can significantly lower the chances of your home being burgled. Remember, the key to home security is prevention and awareness. Let’s work together to keep our homes and community safe.

Variety of cuisines Fast food chains and international restaurants have become popular, offering a wide range of dishes and more food choices to local people. The Coach Hotel Rating: ★★★☆☆ 164 reviews Patsy190 writes: 6 of us stayed here for the weekend. The first thing we noticed on entering our room was how small it was. Our rooms were clean, but the bed cover was stained. The furniture was really outdated, especially the bathroom, which had an old pink suite and linoleum on the floor. The ‘shower’ was a hose that you fit onto the taps. The sink was in the bedroom, right next to the television sockets which seems pretty unsafe to me. We had dinner there, and it was well-cooked, but we were still hungry afterwards because the servings were so tiny. The drinks prices were extortionate – £5 for a small glass of wine. My friend ordered a brandy, but the waitress brought him whiskey. When we complained, she just walked off! Not impressed. I would like to say it was cheap and cheerful but at £120 a night, it was neither – overpriced and depressing more like. MellowBunny writes: Just returned from a 3-day break here, and thought that the Coach Hotel was very good value for money. I had requested a quiet room and this was noted at reception. I got a great room – large, comfortable and clean, with a seating area overlooking the racecourse. The only disappointing thing was that there were no tea/coffee facilities in the room – not even a kettle. The furniture and decor was not particularly up-to-date, but that’s what you would expect from an old hotel. There was a wide selection of well-cooked food on offer. At breakfast I had poached eggs, and they were done to perfection. In the evening, I had a delicious three-course meal, and I wasn’t kept waiting for so long between courses, which is definitely a plus when you’re dining alone. I found the staff friendly and always willing to help. JadeUnicorn writes: Don’t be fooled by the pictures online. What you see is definitely NOT what you get! First, it’s not close to the city centre – it’s at least a 35-minute walk. Furniture was old and dated, although the bed was comfortable. [A] Tiny bathroom, with an absurdly loud extractor fan. No lock on the bathroom door and no toiletries, not even soap. [B] There were cobwebs all over the hotel. [C] The dining room is dark and uninviting, with no windows except one tiny one. [D] The food simply was the type that gives Britain a bad name. Instant coffee and cheap sausages. Service was poor, with staff clearing the table while we were still eating. |

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the option that best fits each of the following questions from 23 to 30.
Are you sure?
Knowing what is good for us and what isn’t can be confusing. For example, drinking coffee. Coffee helps you concentrate and it can help you stay awake when you are tired. However, if you drink more than six cups a day, it may cause headaches, stomach upsets and you may not sleep well. It’s better to just drink two or three cups a day.
How about food? Chocolate contains fat and can make you overweight if eaten excessively. But chocolate also contains chemicals that make you feel happy. It can help if you feel depressed. Red meat has protein and vitamins, which are good for you, but it also contains fat. So if you eat too much, it can damage your stomach and heart.
How about daily activities? Take running. Running is good for you. It helps to make your heart and muscles stronger and produces chemicals that make you feel happy. But it can be bad for you, too. If you are a beginner and run too fast or too far, you can damage your heart and muscles. Studying is obviously good for you and your grades, but studying too hard can cause exhaustion, stress and loss of sleep.
So when you read a newspaper article saying “X is good for you” or “Y is bad for you”, do some research. X may also be bad for you and Y may be good. Always read at least two articles before you decide which is true.

Read the following passage about remote work and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the option that best fits each of the following questions from 31 to 40.
[I] A decade ago, most employers would have balked at the idea of employees regularly working from home. [II] But the pandemic showed that employees could work on their own. [III] Prodoscore, for example, reported that remote workers’ productivity increased 47 percent during the lockdown in March and April 2020, finding that communi-cation activities such as emailing, telephoning and chat messaging all climbed. [IV]
Other recent studies indicate that remote work options increase job satisfaction. Buffer’s 2023 State of Remote Work report found that 91 percent of survey respondents enjoyed working remotely, with flexibility listed as the biggest benefit. Additionally, in 2022, McKinsey surveyed 25,000 workers across a range of industries about their remote work experience. According to the study, seeking out flexible work environ-ments is the third reason why people search for new jobs (better pay/hours and career opportunities are the others). Remote work is such a large priority for workers that 87 percent of the respondents said that when offered the chance to work remotely, they would take it.
There was a time when remote work as we know it wasn’t even a possibility, because the technology didn’t exist. If your colleagues and business partners wanted to get in touch with you when you were out of the office, they couldn’t email, text or direct message to you. You would’ve needed to provide an alternative phone number or email to have a work-related conversation. “Ten years ago, remote employment basically meant a telemarketing or customer service position at below minimum wage,” said Samantha Lambert, director of human resources at Centific. “It was rarely connected with a full-time career. Now, technology affords us the ability to get the same job done, no matter where in the world we are.”
“The modern workforce is increasingly mobile, collaborative and dynamic, and comprises multi generations, all with different communication preferences,” said Stacey Epstein, chief marketing officer at Freshworks.
However, many companies continue to resist this work trend for various reasons. Some business owners may fear a lack of productivity in their employees, while others haven’t invested in teleconferencing and telework tech to support remote workers. Still, some businesses are making the necessary investments to support remote work.
