I. Compound sentences

1. Khái niệm

Câu ghép trong tiếng Anh được gọi là compound sentence, là câu có ít nhất hai mệnh đề độc lập (independent clause) có mối quan hệ về mặt ý nghĩa kết hợp với nhau.

Các mệnh đề này có thể được nối với nhau bởi dấu chấm phẩy, hoặc bởi dấu phẩy và một liên từ.

2. Cách thành lập câu ghép

* Sử dụng liên từ

For: Bởi vì                  

Dùng để chỉ nguyên nhân

And: Và                      

Dùng để thêm ý kiến

Nor: Cũng không        

Dùng để bổ sung một ý kiến phủ định

But: Nhưng                 

Dùng để chỉ sự trái ngược

Ví dụ: Her family planned to go to the beach this summer, but the mother was sick.

II. To-infinitives and bare infinitives
