The charts below give information about children under 18 learning musical instruments in one region of the UK - mẫu 1
The pie chart illustrates the percentage of children under the age of 18 in a particular UK region learning musical instruments in 1996 and 2016, while the bar chart shows their choice of instruments.
Overall, there was a significant increase in the proportion of children learning musical instruments over the period shown, with the piano and keyboard remaining by far the most popular choices.
In 1996, 44% of children in this particular area of the UK learned a musical instrument, while the majority did not. By 2016, the participation had risen substantially, reaching slightly more than three-quarters of the total children.
In terms of the choice of instrument, the piano was the most common in 1996, with 30% of children choosing to learn it, but this was followed by a slight decline to around 28% over the next two decades. Violin followed a similar downward trend, decreasing from approximately 13% to 10% in the same period. Similar changes were also observed for the acoustic guitar and other instruments, at approximately 6% and 3% respectively, with both ending at around 2%. In contrast, keyboard and electric guitar saw a rise in popularity, with the former growing significantly from roughly 22% to reach parity with the piano’s initial level, while the figure for the electric guitar rose to 16%. Finally, no changes were recorded in the proportion of children learning more than 1 instrument, remaining stable at about 12%.

The charts delineate the percentages of children taking lessons about musical instruments and the type instruments that they pursue in a particular area in the UK in 1996 and 2016.
Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that more children became interested in learning how to play musical instruments over the period given, with rises in popularity for electric guitar, and more notably, keyboard. In contrast, children’s interest in guitar, violin, piano, and “other” declined, while there were no changes in those learning how to play multiple instruments.
Looking first of all at the pie charts, in 1996, the figure for children learning a musical instrument was only slightly lower than those who did not, accounting for 44% and 56%, respectively. However, these categories switched positions after ten years, with the figure for those pursuing a musical instrument dominating the chart at 76%, while only nearly a fourth of them did not learn any instruments.
In terms of the bar chart, in 1996, the piano was the most common instrument chosen for instruction, with 30% of learners, while “other” instruments received the least attention at merely 3%. Over the following decade, children’s interest in acoustic guitar, violin, piano, and “other” declined slightly to 3%, 10%, 26%, and 2% of learners, for each, whereas the opposite was the case for the data for keyboard and the electric guitar learners, with each respective instrument growing drastically to 16% and 30%. Lastly, the percentage for those learning multiple instruments stayed at the same level of around 12% in both years.
