I. Đại từ quan hệ và trạng từ quan hệ

1. Đại từ quan hệ (Relative pronoun)

Đại từ quan hệ được sử dụng để thay thế các danh từ chỉ người/ vật và có thể đóng vai trò là chủ ngữ, tân ngữ hoặc mang nghĩa sở hữu, cụ thể:

Chức năng	Chỉ người	Chỉ vật
Chủ ngữ	Who/ That Eg: He’s the man who talked to me yesterday.	Which/ That Eg: I bought a book which is for you.
Tân ngữ	Who/ Whom/ That Eg: The man whom you saw yesterday was my dad.	Which/ That Eg: This is the CD that I bought for my mom.
Sở hữu	Whose Eg: She’s the girl whose name is Hoa.	Whose/ Of which Eg: That’s the car whose door is broken.

Lưu ý:

· Đại từ quan hệ “that” thường được sử dụng nhiều trong cấu trúc so sánh nhất hoặc sau các đại từ bất định (none, all, everything, everyone ….)

Eg: Anyone that knows about the fact must be proud.

· Đại từ quan hệ khi đóng vai trò tân ngữ trong mệnh đề quan hệ có thể lược bỏ đi

Eg: The man (that) I saw last night was my dad.

· Các đại từ quan hệ “whom, which, whose” có thể theo sau một giới từ

Eg: The man whom you talked to this morning was a friend of mine.

= The man to whom you talked this morning was a friend of mine.

2. Trạng từ quan hệ (Relative adverb)

Trạng từ quan hệ được sử dụng để chỉ thời gian, nơi chốn, lí do.

	Ví dụ
Thời gian	I’ll never forget the day when I first met her.
Nơi chốn	The building where he works is the tallest in my town.
Lí do	That’s the reason why he left her.

II. Mệnh đề quan hệ

1. Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định

Là mệnh đề được dùng để xác định danh từ đứng trước nó, không có nó câu sẽ không đủ nghĩa.

Eg: Do you know the man who came here yesterday?

2. Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định

Là mệnh đề có chức năng bổ sung, cung cấp thêm thông tin, nếu không có nó thì câu vẫn đủ nghĩa.

Eg: Mr. Richard, who is standing at the door, is my teacher.

Lưu ý:

· Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định luôn được ngăn cách với mệnh đề chính bằng dấu phẩy

· Không dùng “that” với mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định

Các trường hợp sử dụng mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định:

Danh từ riêng	Eg: We have visited Sue, who had an accident two days ago.
Danh từ chỉ những đối tượng duy nhất	Eg: My father, who is 60 years old, has just retired.
Danh từ đã được xác định	Eg: This house, which is very expensive, was bought by a very rich man.
Các từ chỉ số lượng	Eg: I bought a lot of books, all of which are about wildlife.

III. Sự lược bỏ đại từ quan hệ

Trong mệnh đề quan hệ xác định, khi đại từ quan hệ làm tân ngữ thì đại từ quan hệ đó có thể được lược bỏ, nhất là đối với văn phong thân thiết, suồng sã.

Eg: The man (who/ whom) I wanted to meet was away on holiday.

IV. Sự rút gọn mệnh đề quan hệ

1. Nếu mệnh đề quan hệ là mệnh đề chủ động thì rút gọn thành Ving

Eg: The man who stood at the door is my uncle.

= The man standing at the door is my uncle.

2. Nếu mệnh đề quan hệ là mệnh đề bị động thì rút gọn thành VpII

Eg: The woman who was given a flower looked very happy.

= The woman given a flower looked very happy.

3. Rút gọn thành to V khi đứng trước đại từ quan hệ có số thứ tự hoặc so sánh nhất

(the first, the second, the only, the last …..)

Eg: The first student who comes to class has to clean the board.

= The first student to come to class has to clean the board.

V. Bài tập áp dụng

Bài 1. Nối hai câu riêng lẻ dưới đây thành một câu sử dụng mệnh đề quan hệ.

1. He worked for a woman. She used to be an artist.

2. They called a doctor. He lived nearby.

3. I wrote an email to my sister. She lives in Italy.

4. Linh liked the waiter. He was very friendly.

5. We broke a car. It belonged to my uncle.

6. Ba dropped a cup. It was new.

7. Nam loves books. They have happy endings.

8. I live in a city. It is in the north of Vietnam.

9. The man is in the class. He is wearing a blue hat.

10. The woman works in a hospital. She is from India.
